CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

AS SIDNEY DROVE AWAY from Mystic Willy’s residence, wisps of scented sage smoke curled out of the ashtray. She hit the highway heading east. Darkness had descended and the headlights carved two tunnels of light through the black pitch of forest. “Let’s check in with Dr. Linthrope,” she said to Darnell. “Put it on speaker.”

After a few rings a man’s voice answered.

“Hi, Dr. Linthrope,” Darnell said.

“It’s Stewart.”

“Just checking in, Stewart,” Sidney said. “Making any progress?”

“The doc is still working on the autopsy. I’m working, too, but I have a few lab results for you.”

“Great.” The clock on the dash read 6:30 p.m. “How late will you be there?”

“As late as you need us to be.”

“Can you give me an hour?”

“Sure. That’ll give the doc time to wrap things up.”

“See you then.” Sidney disconnected and said to Darnell, “Look up Infinite Joy and get an address for Lola Sweet.”

“Copy.” Darnell’s fingers clicked on the keyboard at lightning speed, then paused. “Found her website. She’s right off the highway on Whisper Ridge Road.”

“So what’s she promoting?”

He started scanning her site. “Looks like sex magic is definitely a thing. Says here that sex spells can be very powerful and effective. I quote: ‘If you’re in a situation where your loved one does not match your feelings, and you’re suffering in silence, these spells can change your life. Using customized magic, you can get a special person to sleep with you.’”

“Really? It says that?”

“Yes, ma’am. Lola goes on to talk about how you can create high intensity sex magic with your partners, or yourself, if you choose to go solo. You can learn to raise your psychic energy and pleasure while …” he stopped for a moment and cleared his throat, then continued. “Having an orgasm.”

Stifling a smile, she glanced at him. Speaking frankly about sex with his boss was a new road to maneuver. “Go on.”

“She has a list of spells that you can order with a click. An obsession love spell, or ones for forgiveness, better communication, acceptance of a partner, or to stop arguing.”

“Covers a lot of ground. Read the description for the obsession love spell.”

“Do you want someone to fall madly in love with you?” he read. “And not be able to get you off their mind? This spell can help achieve that.” He glanced at Sidney and said mockingly, “A mere $350 for any of these spells.”

Sidney whistled. “Love doesn’t come cheap.”

“So it seems. There’s a video here. Let’s see what this is.” He clicked and said nothing while Sidney concentrated on her driving. After a lengthy pause, she glanced over. “So what’s it about?”

“Lola is also a stripper. You can have her perform at parties for $400 an hour. I was just checking it out.”

“You had to watch the whole performance?”

“Just being thorough, Chief.”

“Perks of the job,” she chuckled.

“Affirmative. Lola dresses like a witch, with a pointy hat and a black dress that looks painted on.”

“Must be doing a good job. You couldn’t pull your eyes away.”

“She strips down to pasties and a G-string, but it’s done very tastefully.
